Security deposit return deadline in New Hampshire

A New Hampshire landlord has 30 days after the tenancy ends to return a security deposit or send a written list of what was kept.

Deadline
30 days
What the landlord must send
The landlord must give a written, itemized list of damages with evidence that repairs were or will be done.
If the landlord gets it wrong
A landlord who does not comply owes twice the deposit plus interest due, less lawful charges.
Deposit limit
1 month’s rent or $100, whichever is greater
Interest
A deposit held 1 year or longer earns interest at the rate paid on regular savings accounts.

The landlord must give a signed receipt for the deposit, and the tenant has 5 days after moving in to list needed repairs.

The law

N.H. Rev. Stat. §§ 540-A:6, 540-A:7, 540-A:8. Read the statute.

Checked against the statute in October 2026. Laws change, so confirm the current rule before you rely on it.

What to do next

If the deadline has passed, or the landlord kept money without a proper list, put your request in writing. Ask for the deposit back by a specific date, and keep a copy. The free first letter in the Deposit Demand Letters kit does this for New Hampshire, and the deadline calculator works out your exact date from your move-out day.
