Who Do I Complain To?

Every complaint has a referee — most people just don't know which one. Find yours. All complaints below are free to file.

🏦 Bank, credit card, lender, credit bureau, or debt collector

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Companies generally must respond within 15 days. → consumerfinance.gov/complaint

🛒 Scam, fraud, shady business practices, or identity theft

The Federal Trade Commission → reportfraud.ftc.gov. Identity theft specifically → identitytheft.gov. Online crime → ic3.gov (FBI).

⚖️ Almost any business, in your state

Your state attorney general's consumer protection division — often the fastest real-world results. Find yours → naag.org/find-my-ag

🏠 Housing discrimination by a landlord, seller, or lender

HUD's Office of Fair Housing → hud.gov/fairhousing — race, religion, sex, disability, family status, and national origin are all protected.

✈️ Airline — refunds, bumping, baggage, delays

The U.S. Department of Transportation → transportation.gov/airconsumer. Airlines must respond to DOT complaints.

🏥 Medical bill — surprise billing or estimate blown past

🩺 Health insurance claim denied

Your state insurance department (find it → naic.org). Self-funded employer plan? U.S. Dept. of Labor EBSA: 1-866-444-3272 → askebsa.dol.gov

💼 Employer owes you wages or overtime

U.S. Dept. of Labor Wage & Hour Division: 1-866-487-9243 → dol.gov/agencies/whd — free, confidential, retaliation is illegal. Your state labor department is often faster for final paychecks.

📱 Phone, internet, TV billing or service

📦 Mail problems or postal fraud

Your state public utility commission — search "[your state] public utility commission complaint."

🚗 Car dealer, repair shop, or warranty

State attorney general (above) + FTC. For safety defects → nhtsa.gov
