Security deposit return deadline in Kansas

A Kansas landlord has 30 days after the tenancy ends to return a security deposit or send a written list of what was kept.

Deadline
30 days
What the landlord must send
The landlord must give written notice itemizing what is kept, and return the balance within 14 days of determining the charges, but no later than 30 days after the tenancy ends, possession is delivered and the tenant demands it.
If the landlord gets it wrong
If the landlord fails to comply, the tenant can recover the amount due plus damages of 1.5 times the amount wrongfully withheld.
Deposit limit
1 month’s rent unfurnished, 1.5 months furnished, plus up to half a month for pets

If the tenant does not demand the deposit within 30 days, the landlord must mail what is due to the last known address.

The law

Kan. Stat. § 58-2550. Read the statute.

Checked against the statute in October 2026. Laws change, so confirm the current rule before you rely on it.

What to do next

If the deadline has passed, or the landlord kept money without a proper list, put your request in writing. Ask for the deposit back by a specific date, and keep a copy. The free first letter in the Deposit Demand Letters kit does this for Kansas, and the deadline calculator works out your exact date from your move-out day.
