When your final paycheck is due in Utah

In Utah, if you are fired or laid off, your final paycheck is due within 24 hours. If you quit, it is due on the next regular payday.

Fired or laid off
Within 24 hours
If you quit
Next regular payday
If the employer pays late
If wages are not paid within 24 hours of a written demand, they continue from the demand until paid, up to 60 days; the suit must be filed within 60 days of separation.

The employer meets the 24-hour rule by mailing (postmarked within one day), direct deposit, or hand delivery.

The law

Utah Code § 34-28-5. Read the statute.

Checked against the statute in October 2026. Laws change, so confirm the current rule before you rely on it.

What to do next

If the deadline has passed, ask for the wages in writing first and keep a copy. The free first letter in the Wage Claim Letters kit does this. If that doesn’t work, small claims court is the usual next step. The final paycheck lookup compares states side by side.
